A judge tossed out a coal CEO's defamation lawsuit against John Oliver

Since the current prime minister is giving an unremarkable performance, it's safe to assume that the upcoming election will see a new candidate voted into office-but there's a problem.

As part of that segment, Oliver spent a good deal of time on the behavior of Bob Murray, the CEO of Murray Energy Corporation, and so Murray sued HBO and Oliver for a "meticulously planned attempt to assassinate [his] character and reputation".

John Oliver started off this episode ofLast Week Tonight by bringing up an old case that the whole show has been embroiled in for a few months. "The last time they did that, they wound up with Mussolini".

John Oliver has emerged from a defamation lawsuit unscathed. Oh, I'm sorry, you thought maybe Trump would not pop up in this story?

Because of the ban, Berlusconi may use his popularity to influence the election, Oliver said. What he discovered was that the government coalition can pick a non-politician to run or, as he described, "a random jackass that Italy has never heard of". "We asked half a dozen Italian legal experts, and while they told me I couldn't run for prime minister of Italy, they also admitted there is no explicit provision in the Italian constitution that says non-citizens can't run for PM", he explains, "so as far as I'm concerned....we have ourselves an air bud scenario". Fake news along with candidates that speak in unsafe ways about immigration and vaccine skepticism are gaining support, and every fact Oliver brings up about Luigi Di Maio or Matteo Salvini is increasingly alarming. "Remember, the rules of basketball did not explicitly state that [Air Bud] couldn't play". But, you know what? Well, I am that dog, Italy. Because I would like to argue that I'd make just as good a leader as many of your political figures. Standing in front of the flames and faux lava, Oliver made one last plea: "And yes, Italy, my candidacy for prime minister may be a complete and total farce, but be honest, incredibly, I am far from your worst option".
