After India snub, Tibetans shift Dalai Lama event from Delhi

While "Thank You India" event venue has been moved, the Central Tibetan Administration officials say that a decision to move it was being considered even before the newspaper reports regarding the Cabinet Secretary's directive emerged.

While Tibetan leaders have officially said they "understand" India's "compulsions", the government has picked sentiments of "outrage, hurt and anger" following the cabinet secretary's note.

Last week, the External Affairs Ministry (MEA) responded to the report of advisory asking central and state government functionaries and leaders to stay away from the Dalai Lama-led "Thank You India" campaign saying that India's position on the Tibetan leader is "unchanged".

It is reported by the media sources that two events, which were to be attended by the Dalai Lama, were scheduled to take place in New Delhi - an inter-faith prayer at the Gandhi Samadhi in Rajghat on March 31 and a "Thank You India" event at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex on April 1.

"We want to express our gratitude to people of India for it", Dagpo told PTI.

The event "Thank You India", which was chose to be held at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex on April 1 in Delhi, is shifted to Dharamsala.

The note was reportedly issued a day before the foreign secretary departed for Beijing to hold talks with China's Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou, Foreign Minister Wang and State Councillor Yang Jiechi.

Ngodup Dongchung, the representative of the Dalai Lama in Delhi, when asked if the community felt disappointed about this development, said, "Some people may be disappointed". He said there had been no communication from the Indian government to the Tibetan administration on this issue. "These are likely to be followed up by additional events in Delhi as well as other states of India".

The move many believe is India's attempt to preen China's feathers that were ruffled by Dalai Lama's visit to Arunachal Pradesh previous year.

Reportedly, equations with China saw a downfall, after the Dalai Lama's visit to Arunachal Pradesh in April previous year.

Following the media report on the note by the Cabinet Secretary, the MEA on Friday had said that the Dalai Lama is a revered religious leader and is deeply respected by the people of India, adding there is no change in that position. "His Holiness is accorded all freedom to carry out his religious activities in India", the foreign ministry statement had said.
