Almost half a million smoke alarms recalled

Almost half a million smoke alarms recalled

- A deadly house fire in St. Mary's County where two children were killed and four other family members were injured is bringing more attention to fire safety and smoke alarms.

Out an abundance of caution, the North-Carolina based business is recalling 452,000 smoke alarms in the US and 40,000 in Canada that might fail to detect smoke.

The alarms were sold for between $20 and $40 from September 2016 through last January at The Home Depot, Walmart and other retailers, plus online at Amazon.com, ShopKidde.com and other websites.

"We have voluntarily initiated this recall out of an abundance of caution".

The Vancouver Fire Department is urging people to check for recalled smoke alarms. If you see the yellow cap, then your alarm is most likely defective.

Kidde Fire Alarms Recalled for Risk of Failure
Almost half a million smoke alarms recalled

There was a notice published earlier this week that detailed that a yellow cap was left on during the manufacturing process and can cover up to two of the smoke sensors. No reports of incidents or injuries as a result of a yellow cap being present have been reported.

Consumers should remove the alarm from walls or ceilings and look through a side opening for a yellow cap.

The Insurance Journal noted that Kidde recalled almost 40 million fire extinguishers previous year following reports that they didn't work-and even caused one death in 2014. Workers will come to the home, check the alarms and replace them if necessary.

Last year, Kidde recalled about 40 million fire extinguishers, some of which had been on the market for decades, because they may not work right in an emergency.
