Apple Buys Texture Digital Magazine Service in Subscription Push

Apple Inc will buy digital magazine service Texture, which lets users read titles for a monthly subscription fee, the iPhone maker said on Monday. The app is now run by Next Issue Media LLC, owned by a group of publishers and other companies including Hearst Corp. Within its large catalog, the app curates magazine articles based on the user's interests. Texture's apps for iOS, Android, and Windows 10/8 (yes) will continue to work - at least for the time being.

Apple's purchase of Texture signals the Cupertino tech giant's expansion of its services segment, which includes Apple Music, iBooks and other services.

"I'm thrilled that Next Issue Media, and its award-winning Texture app, are being acquired by Apple", said John Loughlin, CEO of Next Issue Media / Texture, in a statement.

The largely evasive talk, titled "Curation in Media - Why It Matters", took the Austin Convention Centre audience through Apple TV and News strategy.

Apple's Eddy Cue confirms the buy in a statement (via TechCrunch): "We're excited Texture will join Apple, along with an impressive catalog of magazines from numerous world's leading publishers".

On the video service, Cue noted that Apple - despite analyst conjecture - isn't interested in buying great partners such as Netflix or Disney, since Apple prefers to buy small companies with ideas that will become the next big thing. "The Texture team and its current owners could not be more pleased or excited with this development".

And yet, CNN's Dylan Byers, who interviewed Cue, asked why the NRA has a presence in the App Store and on Apple TV. "We could not imagine a better home or future for the service".
