A Mi-8 helicopter of a Russian security service crashed in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Chechnya on Wednesday killing no fewer than five people, a regional law enforcement source said.

Three people died in the Mi-8 helicopter crash, the Chechen Health ministry told TASS.

According to Russian news agencies, rescuers found two survivors at the crash site. Originally, it was reported that the crash killed 32, but the death toll was later specified to 39.

Kadyrov said "complicated weather conditions" may have caused the crash on March 7 in the mountains of southern Chechnya.

The disaster occurred just after the accident of an AN-26 plane in which 33 people were killed, including 27 officers, during a landing maneuver at the air base of Jmeinin, in Syria.

Mr Kaydrov said the helicopter belonged to the Russian border guard service. "We do not have any information about the victims yet", the centre's representative said.
