Awful news for Arsenal's Jack Wilshere, good news for Liverpool's Joe Gomez

The 26-year-old, who received an England call-up for the first time since 2016, missed Friday's 1-0 win over the Netherlands due to the problem.

Wilshere was expected to recover in time for Tuesday's friendly against Italy at Wembley Stadium but the Three Lions have now confirmed that the playmaker will play no part in the game.

Jack Wilshere's hopes of making Gareth Southgate's England World Cup squad appear to be hanging by a thread after the Arsenal midfielder was ruled out of Tuesday's friendly with Italy.

"The Arsenal midfielder didn't travel to Amsterdam as a precaution and will remain with his club".

More news: Eric Reid could have a viable collusion case, too

Gomez will, though, stay with Gareth Southgate's squad for further assessment following his 10th-minute withdrawal during the victory over the Netherlands.

The England worldwide is a life long Gunners fan and joined the clubs academy as a nine-year-old, so for this reason Arsenal manager Wenger has revealed that he has not hesitated to make him captain on several occasions this season.

After winning his place back in the Arsenal midfield following a season-long loan spell at Bournemouth last season, Wilshere was expected to make Southgate's 23-man squad for this summer's tournament in Russian Federation, but is running out of time to impress and prove his fitness.

England open their World Cup Group G campaign in Russian Federation against Tunisia on June 18 before facing Panama and Belgium.
