Azlan Shah Cup: India beat Ireland 4-1 to take fifth spot

India thus avenged the 2-3 loss to Ireland in their last league stage match on Friday which had eliminated their already slim chances of qualifying for the medal rounds. India denied Ireland their first penalty corner of a match with a decision for video referral that was ruled in India's favour.

Ramandeep Singh (10 minute) and Amit Rohidas (26th) scored for India while Shane O'Donoghue (24th), Sean Murray (36th) and Lee Cole (42th) struck for Ireland.

Blake Glovers, after a number of wasted penalty corners, scooped high into the net on 21 minutes for Australia to take a 3-0 lead. Ramandeep came up with a great finish to direct Varun Kumar's flick into the net. But conceded an equaliser soon after through Shane O'Donoghue. And Varun Kumar finally managed to convert a PC for the first time in the tournament - his flick crashing inside the cage after a deflection from an Irish defender.

The 24th minute field goal was a result of good team work between Kirk Shimmins, Sean Murray and O'Donoghue.

India continued in the same vein and won another penalty corner in the 32nd minute and Varun scored with a fierce dragflick past Carr to help India tale a comfortable 3-0 lead. The Irish dominated the ball possession while their goalkeeper Jamie Carr came up with some brilliant saves to keep India under pressure. Indian forwards started looking desperate to make forays into the striking circle.

Ibarra broke the fans' hearts with a penalty corner conversion and the South Americans held on to the lead and make amends for their 2-1 defeat to the Tigers during the round robin. India tried hard to draw level but found a resilient Irish defence in the way. But dragflicker Amit Rohidas couldn't make it count.

Three goals in five minutes towards the end of the opening quarter put them on top and they never looked back as they set up a final meeting with Australia on Saturday. Murray won his team their second penalty corner of the contest and the variation saw O'Donoghue's low drag deflected past the keeper by the diving Cole.

After a big win over Malaysia, it seemed that the Indian team has made a comeback and against Ireland they made a 2-1 lead in the 26th minute.
