Blizzard bears down on New England, snarling travel

Blizzard bears down on New England, snarling travel

Five days after the latest nor'easter dumped roughly a foot of snow on most of ME, another winter storm is expected to deliver an even bigger dumping Tuesday and Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has most of Rhode Island getting 12 to 18 inches, while AccuWeather has Rhode Island and Eastern Massachusetts in a range of 12 to 24 inches. The second major storm in less than a week is moving up the East Coast, dumping heavy snow and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses from Pennsylvania to New England.

The National Weather Service reports Sunday that a southern storm is expected to make its way up the coast causing more snowfall. "Not necessarily in terms of snow, although they may get a few inches more, but the issue across far southeast Mass.is it's going to be a wetter snow", said Frank.

Although the latest storm was not expected to bring as many power outages as a nor'easter last week, about 12,000 customers in MA lost power Tuesday morning. Last week, a nor'easter slammed into the East Coast on the heels of an earlier powerful storm that killed at least eight people and knocked out power for 2.7 million. Road crews will have a tough time keeping up with the roads when snow falls this heavily. Far eastern and southeastern CT could see gusts up to 40 miles per hour.

Minor coastal flooding is also expected on the MA coast on Tuesday morning.

Travel in eastern MA will be "very hard to impossible, especially during the Tuesday morning and potentially the Tuesday evening commute", the weather service warned.

"Heavy snow expected", the weather service warned.

Almost 50 million people are under a winter weather advisory or warning from the Tennessee Valley into New England including New York City, Boston, and Portland, Maine.

Wednesday's storm caused the roof of a CT building that had been vacant for 20 years to collapse under the weight of the snow.

Lower tides meant the storm would probably not bring a repeat of the flooding that sent icy water pouring into the streets of Boston during a storm early this month, forecasters and officials said.

"We're not out of winter yet, that's for sure", Paul Knight, of Portland, said as snow accumulated on his eyebrows during a stroll.

"We have wires down in many parts of town, along with trees blocking roads", he said.

The winter weather advisory is expected to expire at 10 am Tuesday. A storm like this on the tail end of the other two we have had isn't great for some people.
