British scientist Stephen Hawking dead at age 76

While the brilliant mind behind the theory of relativity was instantly recognisable by Einstein's unruly "mad scientist" hair, Hawking's wheelchair and his synthesised voice made him every bit as iconic.

"As a person he's an inspirational character", said Shajid Haque, a physics lecturer at the University of Windsor.

Eddie Redmayne, who won an Oscar for his lead role in the film, said: "We have lost a truly lovely mind, an astonishing scientist and the funniest man I have ever had the pleasure to meet".

"He was really the father of the (students)", Brandenberger said of his time with Hawking at Cambridge University.

Inside the shell of his increasingly useless body was a razor-sharp mind, with an enduring fascination with the mysteries of black holes.

Neymar, the world's most expensive footballer, took an online kicking Wednesday (Mar 14) for tweeting a picture of himself grinning in a wheelchair and wearing a bathing suit to pay homage to Stephen Hawking. "In which case, the party is on June 28, 2009, and the coordinates are 52° 12' 21" N, 0° 7' 4.7" E. If you're a time traveler and reading this, please don't keep Mr. Hawking waiting. In 1986, aged 44, his voice was removed to save his life after an attack of pneumonia. "I felt it was very unfair - why should this happen to me". "The answer is, not a lot".

"He made a big impact on science and my life", says 14-year-old A.J. Monfette, "knowing he survived through that and could still talk but couldn't actually talk, it was incredible".

Stephen Hawking, left, is joined by a group of of scientist including Princeton physicist Freeman Dyson, right, announce the new Breakthrough Initiative focusing on space exploration and the search for life in the universe, during a press conference, Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at One World Observatory in NY.

"My goal is simple", Hawking once said. But we can understand the universe. And much of Hawking's work was in the field of cosmology, a deep-thinking branch of astronomy that tries to explain the totality of the universe.

His 1988 book "A Brief History of Time" became an worldwide bestseller and brought him widespread fame. He sold 9 million copies of that book, though many readers didn't finish it.

"This was Stephen Hawking". He died at the age of 76.

"Even mere survival would have been a medical marvel, but of course he didn't just survive". He was a famous cosmologist and an activist who changed the world's perception of what a scientist could be. To this day, Flournoy says his research is building on that legacy.

It was a revelation for theoretical physicists, since the gravity around black holes was always assumed to be so great that it sucked in all energy in their vicinity, including light.

The concept that stuff, radiation, comes out of black holes may have upset science fiction authors, but it inspired young scientists such as Tyson, who described it as "spooky profound". But Hawking tells in his 2013 memoir how Wilde became more and more depressed as her husband's condition worsened.

In January 2016, he joked that his lack of a Nobel was "a pity".

"People just appeared from everywhere", Ritz said. "This is a pity because if they had I would have got a Nobel Prize".

Prof Hawking was twice married and divorced.

In addition to his many books for adults, Hawking wrote several children's books with his daughter, Lucy, that combine science and adventure.
