CCTV footage shows moment man was shot inside courtroom

A USA federal judge released footage of the 2014 fatal shooting of a gang member inside a courtroom Monday, showing the defendant rushing a witness with a pen before officers shot him.

Angilau jumped over the witness stand, hurling himself at the other gang member, who moves out of the stand just in time and retreats to the corner of the room. He was not hurt, the "Daily Mail" reports.

The video then shows a deputy US Marshal, identified in court documents as Jane Doe, pull her gun from its holster and rapidly fire four shots at Angilau.

The clip of the incident, that took place in 2014, has only now been released to the public after US District Judge John Dowdell dismissed a lawsuit brought by Angilau's family claiming excessive force.

The 24-second video recording shows Angilau charging towards a witness with a pen in hand.

Angilau's family wanted a jury to see the video to see if the marshal used appropriate force after the Federal Bureau of Investigation found the shooting was justified.

Angilau's lawyer, Robert Sykes, urged the judge to release the video so that the jury could see and decide if excessive force was used in the shooting.

Someone yells "whoa, whoa, whoa" but before any officers could react, Angilau sprinted toward the witness and leaped with his right arm cocked overhead with the pen in hand.

A judge made a decision to release courtroom footage of the incident after a lawsuit from Angilau's family was dismissed.

It was thus Angilau whose actions required Doe to make a split-second choice whether to end the attack or risk that Angilau would seriously harm V.T. He also noted that the defendant was already on the ground when the Marshall fired the final three shots, CBS News also reported.

As he was on the floor, he was shot four times (in quick succession) by a nearby police marshal.

'There was no necessity to use force'.

Sykes said the Angilau family hasn't decided if they'll appeal the ruling throwing out the wrongful death lawsuit.

He was in court after being one of 17 people named in a 29-count racketeering indictment that accused gang members of conspiracy, assault, robbery and weapons offences.

He was the last defendant in the case to stand trial, with previous defendants being sentenced to 10 to 30 years in prison.

A mistrial was declared after the shooting.

Faces of the judge, attorneys and jurors are blurred out and the agency declined comment about the release of the video.

The video was released after a media coalition, including The Associated Press, argued for its release as an important record in a police use-of-force case, according to the AP.
