Celtics dealt blows in form of Smart, Theis injuries

The news keeps getting worse for the Boston Celtics.

Smart injured his thumb during the Celtics' loss the Indiana Pacers on Sunday night (Monday, PHL time).

Kyrie Irving will miss Wednesday's game against the Washington Wizards with knee soreness, according to ESPN's Chris Forsberg.

If Smart is sidelined for an extended period of time (potentially into the playoffs), it would be a big hit to the Celtics.

Even if the diagnosis is confirmed to be a torn right thumb, Smart may not necessarily require surgery and could play through the injury.

Theis and Smart were both hurt in Sunday's game, with Smart's injury occurring when he dove to the floor. Smart is now going over his treatment options with the Celtics medical staff, but with no clear timetable to return, he should be sent to the waiver wire in most cases.

In his first season with Boston, Irving leads the team with 24.8 points and 5.1 assists per game.

Smart's right hand was later put in a cast, and he expressed confidence that, "it will be all right".

The 6-foot-9 Theis' absence will likely lead to more minutes for Aron Baynes and Greg Monroe.
