Celtics guard reportedly tears tendon in thumb

Boston Celtics forward Marcus Morris (13) loses control of the ball while Indiana Pacers forward Thaddeus Young (21) looks on during the second half at TD Garden.

According to Yahoo Sports, point guard Marcus Smart suffered a torn tendon in his right thumb and will be out indefinitely.

But in a bit of good news, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the team believes the left knee soreness hampering star Kyrie Irving is not serious. Irving is expected to miss some time while his knee heals.

Smart will get a second opinion on the extent of the injury. Smart is now going over his treatment options with the Celtics medical staff, but with no clear timetable to return, he should be sent to the waiver wire in most cases. There have been some conflicting reports about Smart's thumb injury, but Danny Ainge appears to know what's going on, per the Boston Herald's Mark Murphy. As of Monday afternoon, they had not learned whether the guard will need surgery.

Smart is averaging 24.4 FanDuel points per game this season, with 10.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.4 3-pointers per contest.

Those numbers ballooned to 7.8 points and 5.3 rebounds since the All-Star break.
