Cigarette Use Exposes Teens to Toxic Chemicals

A new study by UC San Francisco researchers shows that smoking e-cigarettes deliver chemicals that could potentially cause cancer and popular fruity flavors appear to be the worst.

The relatively small study tested 67 teenagers who reported vaping, compared to 16 teens who both vape and smoke traditional tobacco cigarettes.

"The presence of harmful ingredients in e-cigarette vapor has been established‍; we can now say that these chemicals are found in the body of human adolescents who use these products", they wrote in their report, published in the journal Pediatrics.

Many studies support the theory that kids who vape are more likely to go on to use other tobacco products, but there hasn't been much hard evidence about how directly risky e-cigarettes are.

In their turn, the teenagers who consume e-cigs, exclusively, presented by 300% higher amounts of toxins in their urine samples in comparison to the teenagers who don't smoke or vape.

'E-cigarettes have the potential to addict the next generation, ' he said.

The same CDC report found that only 2.2 percent of middle-schoolers and eight percent of high-schoolers had smoked traditional cigarettes in the past 30 days.

In particular, fruit-flavored e-cigarettes produced significantly higher levels of acrylonitrile.

E-CIGARETTES could increase your risk of cancer even when there's no trace of nicotine, experts have warned.

On the other hand, Rubinstein believes that the toxins present in e-cigarettes are given by the glycerin and propylene glycol additives that give the specific flavors of each brand in part.

Test analysing the teens' pee and spit samples revealed traces of several chemicals linked to cancer, including acrylamide - found in chips and burned toast previous year.

"E-cigarettes are marketed to adults who are trying to reduce or quit smoking as a safer alternative to cigarettes", said Rubinstein.

UC San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health. Further these chemicals were three times higher among cigarette smokers compared to vapers.

The scientists looked at the effects vaping has on teenagers, and their findings are the first to find cancer-causing chemicals in the bodies of youngster who vape. Sixty-seven used e-cigarettes only, while 17 used both e-cigarettes and traditional tobacco cigarettes. They add that e-cigarettes are too new a trend for studies to have linked them with cancer.
