Cities Brace For Power Outages As Another Nor'easter Hits US

Heavy wet snow fell from Pennsylvania across New Jersey and NY and into New England.

Monday, winter storm Quinn, that started in the West, was over the Northern Plains and the Midwest with plenty of wind and snow. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in place from eastern Pennsylvania through the Northeast.

A coastal storm developed late Tuesday night brought a tremendous amount of snow to a good portion of the region during the second nor'easter in just one week.

The combination of heavy snow and strong winds will lead to additional tree damage and power outages.

The morning commute was going smoothly in most areas Wednesday, as the storm had not yet kicked in to gear in most spots.

Between 20cm and 30 cm of wet, heavy snow, some of it accompanied by thunder and lightning, were forecast for New York City and surrounding New Jersey and CT suburbs through Thursday morning.

"Minor to moderate flooding; inundation of low-lying areas, especially where coast was compromised with last storm; overwash, beach erosion also expected", the weather service's Boston office tweeted early Thursday. While snow continued to fall there overnight Thursday, it should be "completely out of the region" by morning, according to the weather service.

NY will have its heaviest snow from about 11 a.m.to 6 or 7 p.m., said Carolan, who provides forecasts for Bloomberg radio.

Boston Public Schools cancelled classes on Thursday and officials declared snow emergencies in several MA communities, according to the Boston Globe newspaper.

Winds and snow are bringing down more power lines, piling on to the crippling outages remaining from last weekend's storm.

Traffic was blocked on Route 505 and Niemeyer Road after several vehicles got stuck in Millcreek Township, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday.

Wind gusts up to 60 mph were forecast on Cape Cod, 45 mph at the Jersey shore and 30 mph around suburban Philadelphia.

It still proved a headache for the tens of thousands of customers still in the dark from the earlier storm - and for the crews trying to restore power to them.

New York City was in recovery mode Thursday, a day after six or more hours of heavy snow and sleet battered the area.

Gusts could create "near-whiteout conditions" for commuters, the National Weather Service said.

Tractor-trailers have been banned on the New York State Thruway from the Syracuse area to New York City, as Gov. Andrew Cuomo said state troopers will ticket any violators. The National Weather Service said that fallen trees and risky road conditions pose a bigger safety threat than the high winds, rain or snow.

Boston and Worcester public schools announced they will be closed Thursday due to the storm.

Most power outages were in New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and NY. Known as "thundersnow", it's snow paired with lightning and resulting thunder.

More than 2,000 flights across the region - 1,700 in the NY metro area alone - were canceled, a number expected to climb as conditions deteriorated.
