Claire Foy Got Paid LESS Than Matt Smith For The Crown

Claire Foy Got Paid LESS Than Matt Smith For The Crown

Since the news of the pay disparity between Claire and Matt broke, many fans of The Crown has taken to social media to express their anger.

For the show's third series, which will move into the 1970s, Olivia Colman will replace Claire as Queen Elizabeth.

While Smith certainly had more star power when he was cast - having previously starred in United Kingdom series Doctor Who - Foy's quickly rose over the span of the first season.

We need to use the Claire Foy case to think about the universal implications of the pay gap, and the risky, roundabout ways in which it might be justified.

Mackie attributed the discrepancy to his experience starring in the iconic British program "Doctor Who" prior to joining the cast of "The Crown". Claire Foy, who won a Golden Globe and two Screen Actor Guild awards for best actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the first two seasons of the Netflix show, was paid less than male co-star Matt Smith, who played husband Prince Phillip, executive producers revealed Tuesday, per USA Today.

"The Crown", which costs $7 million an episode to produce, is replacing its leads for the start of filming in July, with Olivia Colman stepping in as the queen and an actor to replace Smith not yet announced. She was also nominated for an Emmy for her season one performance.

Smith, 35, was not similarly honoured.

However Suzanne Mackie assured that from now on all actresses to play the part of the Queen in The Crown will earn more than anyone else on the show.

The admission about the salaries was made at the INTV conference in Jerusalem this week.

Foy's agent did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

Mark Wahlberg made news earlier this year when it was revealed that he was paid $1.5 million United States for reshoots on movie All the Money in the World, while co-star Michelle Williams received $1,000 US.
