Conflicting reports of Patriots' interest in AJ McCarron as Tom Brady's backup

Conflicting reports of Patriots' interest in AJ McCarron as Tom Brady's backup

The Bills announced his signing on Wednesday.

Free agency hasn't even technically started and things have already turned into a total nightmare for former Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron.

While McCarron isn't a proven starter, he does have potential.

Buffalo traded starting QB Tyrod Taylor to the Browns earlier this month. He also started an AFC wild-card playoff game that season, completing 56.1 percent of his passes for one touchdown and one interception in an eventual a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Bengals and Bills recently did business in the form of a trade that send a Bills offensive lineman to Cincinnati and moved Cincinnati back in the first round of this year's draft. 12 and 22 overall picks. The Bills could package those selections to trade up for one of the draft's top quarterbacks. By moving Taylor to Cleveland, Buffalo essentially put that out of question.

McCarron became a free agent after winning a grievance with the Bengals, for whom he served as a backup quarterback most of his career.

The signing is unlikely to change the Bills' apparent plans to draft a quarterback this April.

There's no better quarterback to learn from in the National Football League right now than Brady, who has five Super Bowls to his name. It's looking less and less likely that he will find what he was looking for but there is still a team without a veteran quarterback going into 2018. McCarron didn't get what he thought he would on the open market, and the Bills were able to capitalize.

What the signing of McCarron tells me is they plan on their rookie QB coming in and playing rather immediately.

It's a win-win scenario.
