Conservatives have only themselves to blame for Trump's tariffs

-U.S. Republican Sen. Jeff Flake said on Thursday he would introduce a bill to nullify President Donald Trump's aluminum and steel tariffs, which Trump finalized in a proclamation earlier in the day.

Historically proponents of free trade, several Republicans dubbed the measures "stupid" and "misguided" - if the United States increases the cost of both materials, they hold, American producers of vehicles and other products will suffer setbacks on the worldwide playing field, and consumers will pay more. "Congress can not be complicit as the administration courts economic disaster". Trump ultimately backed down slightly from what were initially described as broad-reaching, indiscriminate tariffs, exempting Canada and Mexico as well as creating a pathway to exemption for other nations. "I just haven't persuaded him yet".

Members of the US Congress's Republican majority are dismayed over Donald Trump's contention new trade tariffs.

Several Republicans, including Flake, have openly called the President's views on trade misinformed and misguided. But there are few signs on Capitol Hill of the political will to pass a bill to rein in Trump and avert a trade war.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have spoken out against the tariffs.

Both Ryan and Johnson said Thursday they fear the unintended consequences from the steel and aluminum tariffs Trump announced over objections from many fellow Republicans.

"We will continue to urge the administration to narrow this policy so that it is focused only on those countries and practices that violate trade law", Ryan added.
