Craigslist Shut Down Personal Ads After Sex Trafficking Bill Passes

Craigslist's decision to kill its personals section follows the passing of H.R.1865, an anti-online sex trafficking bill that could even harm the consenting, adult sex workers, according to Gizmodo.

Many people used the section to meet and date other users, but it was also popular among sex workers to make arrangements with clients. The bill introduces new penalties - including fines and prison terms of up to ten years - for websites which "unlawfully promote and facilitate" sex work, in addition to "unlawful sex acts with sex trafficking victims".

"Any tool or service can be misused", Craigslist said in a statement.

"To the millions of spouses, partners, and couples who met through craigslist, we wish you every happiness!".

Craigslist said while the personals section is shutting down, it may not be gone forever. The tool helped in identifying over 6,300 victims of sex trafficking in the United States of which approximately 2,000 were children. Hopefully, we can bring them back someday.

Craigslist has dropped its personals section in response to an anti sex-trafficking bill passed on Wednesday.

"We are regretfully taking Craigslist personals offline", it said.

So the issue went to Congress, which wanted to show that it was doing something to fight sex trafficking.

President Donald Trump is expected to sign the bill into law as soon as this week, and, as a result, it's likely we'll see websites and services adopt stricter control and policy over what's posted on their platforms moving forward. The turning point, according to the Internet Association, a lobbying organization that represents multiple tech companies, was changes to the the wording of the bill that would allow tech platforms to use automated methods for screening and deleting sex-trafficking content without implicating themselves, according to Motherboard. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, an opponent of the bill, argues that it silences online speech by forcing Internet platforms to censor their users.
