Firefighters continue to tackle nightclub blaze in Glasgow

"We also need to ensure that there has been no damage due to the excessive heat to our roof and gable end of the theatre and again, this will take a day or two to get reports carried out properly by structural engineers".

The fire, which started in Victoria's nightclub, continues to smoulder.

Several road closures and diversions remain in place until further notice.

Police Scotland has confirmed that a joint investigation is ongoing to establish the cause of the fire, but that it is not believed to be suspicious. We continue to work with partners with regards to those businesses in the area which are affected.

Around 30 firefighters and eight fire engines are still at the scene, with the fire expected to continue for days.

"I had concerns the fire would spread and that was high up in my priorities", he said.

"This was an incredibly hard and complex incident - but the actions of our firefighters were and continue to be outstanding".

It was initially feared that the fire could spread to the 114-year-old Pavilion Theatre, but firefighters said they made saving the building a priority and it was largely untouched.

Thick smoke billowed across the pedestrian precinct and streets were cordoned off, with local residents told to close their windows due to the suspected presence of asbestos.

Assistant Chief Officer Lewis Ramsay said: "This is an extremely challenging incident but the response and professionalism of our firefighters has been outstanding".

Shows at the Pavilion and the nearby Theatre Royal have been cancelled.

The Pavilion thanked emergency services for saving the "grand old lady" of Renfield Street.

A spokesman for the Pavillion said: "The fire did not spread to the theatre and we hope that the only damage we have will be smoke related and to the front doors, which the fire service had to force entry to".

"The smoke was coming into our building and it seemed to be a more serious situation, stinging our eyes and getting heavier and heavier".
