Five thoughts about the firing of Rex Tillerson

Five thoughts about the firing of Rex Tillerson

The departing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson made the mistake of disagreeing with his boss President Donald Trump - leading to his ouster and paving the way for CIA Director Mike Pompeo to assume the role.

During his time in the job, he was faced with an extraordinary array of foreign policy challenges - from North Korean nuclear threats, to Russian intervention in Ukraine, Syria and Western elections, to attacks on U.S. diplomats in Cuba.

Pompeo, who now leads the Central Intelligence Agency, has called for "rolling back" what he called a "disastrous" nuclear agreement negotiated under President Barack Obama.

No doubt that was true, one prime example being the agreement to restrict Iran's nuclear efforts. "This is not an insurmountable task for the coalition forces". She had earlier appeared on Trump's reality TV show, "The Apprentice".

Pompeo is far more hawkish than Tillerson on an array of policy issues, particularly Iran. "He has said how he feels about it and he has given no indication that he has changed his position today". Top economic adviser Gary Cohn announced his resignation last week, not long after communications director Hope Hicks and staff secretary Rob Porter both departed near the start of Trump's second year in office. "And I won't let any director forget it".

The deal was signed between Tehran and six world powers: Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States. Paul is set to make an announcement on Pompeo's nomination on Wednesday, raising speculation that he may come out in opposition.

European leaders have expressed some sympathy for these ideas, if they would help bind Trump's America into a deal they regard as vital for their own national security and Middle East peace.

Although the Senate confirmed Pompeo to his current position 66-32, his hard-line stance on Iran may prove to be a bigger obstacle in his quest to become the top USA diplomat.

It's no secret that Tillerson and Trump had a combative relationship.

But the State Department plays a direct and key role in climate change - not just in worldwide climate negotiations, but also in global aid and development, including choices about which energy sources developing countries should choose - so, such non-answers given as by Pompeo previously should not fly this time around. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, have opposed Trump's threats to unilaterally withdraw.

"From what I've read of Director Pompeo's remarks, they seem to echo the president's", Menendez told Al-Monitor. "The president has a disdain for the agreement and then he has a plan for withdrawal".

Trump tapped the CIA's deputy director, Gina Haspel, to replace Pompeo at the intelligence agency.

"She's an outstanding person who I've gotten to know very well", Trump later told reporters outside the White House, as he prepared for a trip to California. The US intelligence assessment is that the 2015 deal to curb Iran's nuclear weapons program is on balance a good one, and that Trump's criticism of it threatens efforts to constrain Iran's nuclear ambitions and ties with the other nations that negotiated the pact, China, France, Germany, Britain and Russian Federation.

"We congratulate Mike Pompeo on his designation as the new Secretary of State".

Pompeo will be less inclined to accept compromises that do not clearly resolve the defects of the nuclear deal with Iran.

Bannon played a key role in Trump's successful presidential campaign before being appointed to the White House.

He was a weak public presence who considered it an annoyance to engage with the press - when that is a core responsibility of a secretary of state.

The move would sow more instability in the volatile Trump administration and marks the departure of another moderate who sought to emphasise the United States' strong ties to its allies amid Trump's criticism, critics said.
