Gary Cohn Is a 'Globalist' But I Like Him Anyway

White House chief economic adviser Gary Cohn announced his resignation Tuesday.

Despite the disagreement, Trump predicted that Cohn, who he said will leave the White House and "make a couple hundred million", may one day rejoin the administration.

The decision to potentially replace a former Goldman Sachs director with a conservative economic analyst comes amid the White House's attempts to minimize the importance of Cohn's departure, which happened during a reported feud between him and the president over soon-to-be-imposed tariffs. Recently, he pressed Trump not to go ahead with tariffs on metal imports, a battle he appears to have lost.

Trump said he was committed to his proposed tariffs to protect the national steel and aluminum industries, but hinted that he could be "flexible" with some countries.

Cohn was on of the major voices in the administration speaking against the newly announced tariffs on steel and aluminum. "He's been terrific", Trump said Thursday.

The term "globalist" evolved from a mere dogwhistle into an outright slur when white nationalist hub Breitbart used the term to describe Cohn in September, and mimicked the white supremacist code for Jewish people by bracketing it with three globe emojis.

After the tax package was approved, Mr. Cohn tackled an infrastructure initiative, but it has been slow to gain traction and will likely be further handicapped by his departure.

President Trump bid farewell to Gary Cohn at a Cabinet meeting Thursday, telling his outgoing chief economic adviser that he still likes him, even though he's a "globalist".

His relationship with the President began to sour in mid-2017 after Mr. Cohn disagreed with the President's tepid response to clashes between neo-Nazis and anti-racism protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, sources close to Mr. Cohn said.

One of the few policies on which Trump has been consistent, both as a candidate and as president, has been his "America First" trade views. "He may be a globalist but I still like him".
