Google Doodle Celebrates The 98th Birthday Of Geochemist Katsuko Saruhashi

Today's Google doodle features Katsuko Saruhashi, Japanese geochemist who pioneered research on how the fallout from nuclear bombs testing was moving in the sea. She was the first woman to earn a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Tokyo in 1957, for instance, and she would continue such achievements by becoming the first woman to win a prestigious geochemistry award.

She calculated carbonic acid levels based on temperature, pH Level, and chlorinity, which is today referred to as "Saruhashi's Table".

As a scientist and feminist icon, Saruhashi was recognized with an annual prize named after her.

Using data that she had collected over several experiments, and calculating the radioactive fallout that ended up in the oceans, she played an instrumental role in getting both the USA and the then USSR to halt above ground nuclear testing, notes the report.

She died of pneumonia at her Tokyo home September 29, 2007.

She also measured the spread and fallout from nuclear testing in the 1950s.

Saruhashi said: "There are many women who have the ability to become great scientists". With more than ten years of marketing management experience, she has contributed to a variety of traditional and online publications, including MarketingProfs.com, SoftwareCEO.com, and Sales and Marketing Management Magazine.

Katsuko was not satisfied with the number of women in science, and therefore started the Society of Japanese Women Scientists in 1958.

'She was deeply committed to inspiring young women to study science, and established the Saruhashi Prize in 1981, recognizing female scientists for distinguished research in natural sciences, ' Google remembers Saruhashi.

"I would like to see the day when women can contribute to science and technology on an equal footing with men".

Her research also demonstrated how radionuclides could be used to trace ocean currents.

She was the first woman to get elected in Science Council of Japan (1980). Saruhashi inspired several women to pursue science. One of the most well-known of the 23 tests carried out in the following 12 years was the 1954 Bikini Atoll explosion in which the USA tested a hydrogen bomb 1,000 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
