Google's Mobile-First Search Indexing Goes Live

Google's Mobile-First Search Indexing Goes Live

The reason behind the change is that because mobile and desktop versions of pages usually vary widely, it tends to confuse mobile users who end up viewing search results that are better optimised for desktops. That's what Mobile First means: your mobile site is your main indexable site. The change may seem minor, but it underscores how Google views and presents the web to the world-as mobile first.

Google did say it will notify webmasters/site owners that their sites are migrated to the mobile-first indexing process via messages in the Google Search Console.

Google has a single index that serves search results on mobile and desktop, the company said, so desktop search results will be fed by the mobile-first index, too. As it doesn't appear to be the case, there will be only one index, and Google will look to the mobile side of your site to find it.

Until now, Google used content from a page's desktop version to index and rank websites, but switched links at the last moment to a site's mobile page if the user was searching from his mobile device. For example, there are times when a desktop-oriented page would rank higher than a mobile-friendly page, purely because it had better information.

The search giant, which fields much of the world's search queries, said back in 2015 that mobile searches had overtaken desktop in parts of the world.

But on mobiles, for example, the content of search snippets (the quick answers Google shows in search results) will now be extracted from a site's mobile-friendly page.

Now some reports are surfacing over the web that the Google search is updated with a new tab being added to its Search feature.

As a result of these changes, end users might encounter the mobile version of pages in Search results and Google cached pages. That means all text, videos and images in the desktop version need to be available on the mobile site for Google's crawling software to scan and index. Advertisers are seeking more choices to loosen the duopoly's strength, but Google and Facebook continue to work toward holding their media dominance.
