Gujarat MLAs clash over Asaram ashram deaths

Assembly witnessed violence on Wednesday as BJP and Congress members exchanged blows, following which two Congress MLAs - Pratap Dudhat (Savarkundla) and Amrish Der (Rajula) - were suspended for three years and another - Baldevji Thakor (Kalol) - for a year.

Senior Congress legislator Vikram Madam tried to raise a question and participate in the issue but was repeatedly shouted down by the members from treasury benches.

Pradeepsinh Jadeja (BJP) wanted a discussion over wastage of time in the House, while Congress MLA Ambrish Der, at the same time, pressed for a discussion on the deaths. Misdoings of Congress MLAs Vikram Madam, Pratap Dudhat and Ambrish Der have been recorded by the CCTV cameras in the House and we are going to request the Speaker to make it accessible to the media. Trivedi then suspended both the Congress MLAs for the day and they were taken out of the Assembly by the marshals. Suddenly, Congress legislator Pratap Dudhat rushed towards BJP legislator Jagdish Panchal with a microphone from one of the desks and tried to hit him, missing him narrowly. The speaker suspended Dudhat for the rest of the session and adjourned the House, but the scenario remained chaotic. During this time, Der entered the House from the back door and attacked Panchal. This enraged BJP MLAs, who started thrashing Dudhat, pushed him towards the floor of the house and kicked him hard. Soon, other leaders from both the sides joined in resulting in a massive scuffle inside the Gujarat Assembly.

Later, Mr. Der attacked BJP MLAs. The entire Opposition staged a walkout in protest against the ruling, even as state Congress chief Bharatsinh Solanki dubbed it "partisan, unparliamentary and undemocratic". For the last six to seven days, BJP MLA Jagdish Panchal has been uttering bad words and using foul language against me in the House.

The Congress MLAs later met in the chamber of Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani for almost an hour.

The Speaker ruled that such points of order could not be raised.

This also puts a question mark on voting by these three suspended legislators in the Rajya Sabha elections on March 23.
