Hearthstone Gets Spooky with The Witchwood, Its First Expansion of 2018

Hearthstone just entered the Year of the Raven, and now we know what to expect from its first expansion.

Witchwood card packs will be winnable in Hearthstone's Arena mode, and players can purchase them with in-game gold or real money at the same prices as Hearthstone's other card packs. Witchwood card reveals will begin on March 26, and the expansion is slated to go live in mid-April. Themed around the haunted city of Gilneas, players will be able to acquire 135 brand new cards in order to fight off the spirits of the Witchwood.

Along with a bevy of new cards, Witchwood will also introduce a new Echo keyword.

While it's unclear whether this new mode will make use of the Dungeon Run's procedurally generated dungeon-building systems, Hearthstone's Lead Missions Designer Dave Kosak hinted at revisiting the format in an interview with Gaming Trend last month.

Elsewhere, Worgen cards swap attack and health each turn they're in your hand, so you can play them at different times for different results.

Rush is an alternate version of Charge, meaning the minion can attack the moment it is played, but only if it's target is a minion. The expansion also features two legendaries that will impact your hero power at the start of the game if you meet the requirements. Baku the Mooneater-Legendary minion, 7/8, 9-mana cost- rewards odd-cost decks with an upgraded Hero Power (Blizzard did not offer specifics on upgraded Hero Powers, though this may function like a previous Legendary, Justicar Trueheart). Similarly, Genn Greymane is a 6 mana, 6/5 minion that reduces your hero power's cost to one crystal if your deck has nothing but cards with an even mana cost.

The expansion will also add a new Monster Hunt mode to the action, similar to Kobolds & Catacombs' Dungeon Run, that challenges players with a series of eight increasingly hard encounters leading into a big boss fight. There's no official release date set yet, but The Witchwood is scheduled to arrive in mid-April. Even if you don't pre-order, if you log in for a limited time after the expansion launches, you'll receive three Witchwood card packs and a guaranteed class legendary from the new set for free.
