Kelly isn't sure what Ivanka and Jared Kushner do during the day

Speculation is also swirling about the exit of Gary Cohn, Trump's top economic adviser.

Asked Sunday whether Kushner should leave, Christie suggested Kushner should follow the example set by a "noble" Hope Hicks, who announced her resignation as communications director last week.

Kushner and Ivanka Trump, who also serves as a senior White House adviser, have been frustrated by Kelly's attempt to restrict their access to the president, and they perceive his new crackdown on clearances as a direct shot at them, according to White House aides and outside advisers.

After this story broke, just a few hours later, actually, a new one came out saying Kushner was prepared to dig in and really go after John Kelly if he decides to try to force Jared and Ivanka out of the White House.

US President Donald Trump joked about White House "chaos" and poked fun at his aides and wife in a light-hearted speech at an annual dinner on Saturday.

For now, Trump's jokes aside, the Kushners remain in place.

"Throughout this process I have been working closely and in good faith with the White House counsel and my personal counsel to address the unprecedented nature of my role".

The New York Times reported Wednesday night that the Kushner family real estate company obtained two large loans totaling more than $500 million from companies whose executives met with Kushner at the White House a year ago.

Christie's office successfully prosecuted Kushner's dad in the early 2000s for tax evasion, which Jared thought was an unjust attack on his family. But the current administration has carried the practice about as far as can be done.

Splashed on The New York Times front page was the headline, "Kushner's Family Business Received Loans After White House Meetings".

Chris Christie said he was among those who advised President Trump to be careful with hiring family members because of the future effects it could have on the Trump clan.

"So many people have been leaving the White House". U.S. presidents have been earning $400,000 per year since 2001 - along with a $50,000 tax-free expense account - but during his campaign, Donald vowed not to take a salary in the White House.

"To be clear, we did not meet with anyone from the Qatari government to solicit sovereign funds for any of our projects", Taylor said.

"I think the president is starting to wobble in his emotional stability and this is not going to end well", retired four-star general Barry McCaffrey tells The Washington Post.

"Jared does not tell us who he meets with nor do we ask him", said Kushner Cos. spokeswoman Christine Taylor.

As for Kelly, he appeared to hint at his tough spot during an event Thursday at the Department of Homeland Security, where he served as secretary before departing for the White House. "I want to see his birth certificate".
