Kevin Ollie : UConn coach fired after six seasons

According to a release put out by the school, UConn has fired Ollie due to the cloud hanging over the Huskies program. But the decision is tied to the fact that UConn is now under investigation by the NCAA.

The University of CT has begun the process of removing Kevin Ollie as its men's basketball coach.

Kevin Ollie is out at UConn.

Athletic Director David Benedict said. The New Haven Register first reported that news, saying the NCAA was looking into possible recruiting violations. "The University will have no further comment on the matter until the completion of both the University's disciplinary process and the ongoing NCAA investigation".

Perhaps the most unexpected part of this move is UConn's decision to fire Ollie with cause, which in all likelihood will be contested by Ollie's camp.

The Huskies went 14-18 this season, and were eliminated from the AAC tourney after an opening-round loss to SMU on Thursday.

There is no buyout in Ollie's contract, but he is owed $3.5 million per year for the next three years. "Our goal, above all, is to ensure we have a program that UConn Nation can be proud of, including our students, alumni, fans, and all our committed supporters", UConn President Susan Herbst added.

While firing Ollie seemingly has much to do with the NCAA's investigation, it's worth mentioning the program's record since Ollie led UConn to the NCAA championship in 2014, his second season in Storrs, Conn.

Ollie was in the second year of a five-year deal valued at $17.9 million that was signed amid reports he was a candidate for several National Basketball Association jobs. Since winning it all in 2014, UConn has made the NIT in 2015 and got bounced in the second round of the NCAA Tournament a year later.
