Lagonda returns as luxury brand with new Vision concept

Aston Martin has surprised 2018 Geneva Motor Show attendees with an enigmatic debut from its storied sub-brand Lagonda, revealing the Lagonda Vision concept. The Lagonda Vision Concept; a sweeping, daring and not precisely pretty show vehicle which points to its standalone electric future.

Hold up. Haven't we been here before?

Lagonda aims to be the world's first zero emission luxury brand. So while Aston Martin design language can be seen as organic and natural, that of Lagonda is more sculptural, shocking and challenging. From the sound of it, the first new Lagonda will be a sedan, while the second will either be an SUV or coupe.

Bold? Certainly, and plainly Marek Reichman, Aston long-standing design boss, has been given carte blanche to "go long" with the Vision Concept - a vehicle which is expected to heavily influence a forthcoming saloon.

Proportionally, it is said to offer the space of a Rolls-Royce Phantom while occupying the exterior space of the smaller Rolls-Royce Ghost.

Andy Palmer, the company's president and chief executive, said: "We believe people associate luxury in their cars with a certain traditional and even old-fashioned approach because, to date, that is all that's been available to them". "Lagonda exists to challenge that thinking and prove that being modern and luxurious are not mutually exclusive concepts".

Lagonda, he said, intends to be on the cusp of the two trends that will reshape automobiles and the industry that produces them during the coming decade.

This concept presages two new models planned for Lagonda, between 2020 and 2023, with numerous wedgier styling elements expected to feature on those cars.

An additional target is a full wireless recharge time of 15 minutes - an ambition which will nearly certainly require solid-state batteries. Because the majority of the car's structural strength comes through its floor, it has been possible to use apertures in the body far larger than would be wise in conventional cars. Trick doors allow for "unprecedented" ease of access - the back doors are rear-hinged, while a roof section flips back to allow passengers to stand up before exiting. As a result, the steering wheel cannot only move from left to right hand drive according to need, in self-driving mode it can also retract entirely allowing front seat passengers to rotate through 180 degrees to engage in face to face conversation with those in the back. In the meantime, the auto will not only have 360° awareness of the world around it, but also be fully connected to it, allowing occupants unprecedented access to bespoke concierge services and a level of connectivity and cyber-security few enjoy in their own homes, let along their cars.

By now you're probably wondering how Aston Martin, which builds just a few thousand cars per year, will be able to develop all of this technology.

Mercedes-Benz rolled out its EQA concept auto, a compact battery electric vehicle with a virtual radiator that changes appearance depending on the selected driving program.

At a presentation as booming and flashy as its cars, Ferrari has unveiled its 488 Pista speedster at the Geneva auto show.
