Manu Bhaker strikes two gold medals at shooting World Cup

Manu Bhaker strikes two gold medals at shooting World Cup

Bhaker, who studies in the XIth standard, could be the youngest ever to win senior World Cup gold medals for India (though the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) could not confirm this).

The 16-year-old Haryana girl was trailing local favorite and two-time World Cup Finals victor Alejandra Zavala by 1.4 points.

Indian teenager Manu Bhaker won her second Gold medal in as many days, partnering Om Prakash Mitharval to clinch the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team title, a day after she won the Women's 10m Air Pistol individual Gold on her senior World Cup debut. The shooter from Haryana has been the talk of Indian shooting for the previous year, winning nine gold medals in the 61st National Shooting Championship last December as well as surpassing the national record of seasoned star Heena Sidhu on the way. But just like her unflinching persona on the shooting range, her voice betrays no excitement.

The family hopes that the World Cup medal will help attract sponsors and make it financially viable for Manu to continue pursuing the sport.

Manu Bhaker, who recently earned a quota place for the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games scheduled for October, bagged a gold medal in the women's 10m Air Pistol event, to put India firmly on top of the medals tally in the year's first International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup here in Mexico's Guadalajara last evening.

Women: 10m air pistol: 1. "As always, I will look to give my best shot and win medals for my country", she said. This was not the first time she was rewriting a record.

Deepak Kumar and Ghosh won India a Bronze in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team event. With the final six shots remaining the Germans were ahead of the Indians by 0.1, but Manu and Om Prakash finished strong to decisively clinch the battle after 48 shots, nearly a point ahead of the Germans.

Talented young Hungarian Istvan Peni, the world number one, won the Gold, shooting 249.5 while Austria's Alexander Schmirl won Silver with 248.7.

The unassuming pistol shooter from Jhajjar, Haryana, is now focussed on the ISSF Junior World Cup in Sydney followed by the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games next month. Another Indian, Deepak Kumar, finished fourth. That was enough for Manu to pick up yet another new sport with a little bit of encouragement from her parents.
