Mark Hamill named as worldwide guest of honour for St. Patrick's Festival

Hamill made the most of his time here and even made the dream of a lifelong Star Wars fan come true.

In Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Patrick's Festival CEO said: "The role of International Guest of Honour is something we have been considering for a few years".

Hamill will be present in the Presidential stand to view the National Festival Parade on 17 March with the theme this year being Home.

Susan Kirby, chief executive of the festival, said there were many examples of "Irish people and the Diaspora achieving eminence across many different art forms and disciplines worldwide". Groundbreaking in its use of special effects, unconventional editing, and science fiction/fantasy storytelling, the original Star Wars is one of the most successful and influential films of all time. "We're looking forward to welcoming him back "home" to celebrate our national holiday and St. Patrick's Festival with us".

The force will be with revellers at the forthcoming St Patrick's Day parade in Dublin, with Mark Hamill, the Star Wars actor, set to attend as an global guest of honour. The characters included in the latter set of figures include a Sad Porg, C'ai Threnalli, an Ahch-To Caretaker, Paige Tico, a Vulptex, and Luke Skywalker's Force Projection.

The new role was introduced to recognise Irish Diaspora and those with links to Ireland who have made a significant impact overseas.

Hamill's great-grandmother Elizabeth Keating was born in Kilkenny in 1873, and left Ireland for America when she was a teenager. In 1864, Frederick Mumford, a young English sailor was married in New Jersey to Mary Harvey, a recent Irish immigrant.
