McCain questions Trump's pick for Central Intelligence Agency

The president said he was nominating the CIA's deputy director, Gina Haspel, to take over for Pompeo at the intelligence agency. Trump tweeted, "He will do a fantastic job!"

Tillerson thanked interagency colleagues, Foreign Service officers, civil servants and the department's front-line "selfless leaders" who travel overseas "ready to work with longstanding allies, new emerging partners and allies, who now - many are struggling as democracies, and in some cases are dealing with human tragedy, crisis of natural disasters, literally crawling themselves out of those circumstances".

If Pompeo is confirmed, Charles and David Koch will now have a direct line to the State Department, including its already obstructionist positions at the U.N. Climate Treaty.

Haspel has extensive overseas experience and most recently has been deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Only about 60 of roughly 150 State Department posts requiring Senate confirmation have been filled, according to The Washington Post.

Trump announced his decision on Twitter. While Trump said he believes the Iran deal is "terrible", he said Tillerson that it "was okay". I wanted to either break it or do something, and he felt a little bit differently. "I think it's important we just continue to say to Russia, 'Look, you think we don't see what you're doing".

Mike Pompeo went further than many members of his own party in blaming Hillary Clinton, who was then secretary of state, and President Barack Obama's administration for the deaths of four Americans.

Haspel, a 33-year agency veteran, faces questions about the use of torture on terrorist suspects at a CIA detention camp in Thailand as well as the destruction of videotape evidence documenting those acts.
