More Than 150 Whales Stranded in Australia, Sparking Beach Closure

More Than 150 Whales Stranded in Australia, Sparking Beach Closure

More than 150 pilot whales beached in Hamelin Bay, in western Australia, and on Friday, only 15 of the whales were still alive, authorities said. The whales are believed to be the short-finned ones among which a majority has already perished.

Chick said moving the surviving whales was hard logistically due to the rocky beach terrain, the location of dead whales surrounding the live whales and rough seas.

United Kingdom visitor Barrie Brickle said the scene on the beach earlier on Friday was distressing, as the whales repeatedly beached themselves after being pushed back to sea.

Environmental groups have also argued that sonar - used to map the ocean floor or for military purposes - can trigger mass strandings in dolphins and whales, who can be sensitive to underwater noises.

"Unfortunately, most of the whales beached themselves on dry land overnight [on Thursday] and have not survived", Parks and Wildlife Service spokesperson Jeremy Chick said in a statement.

The DBCA is working with the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River to remove the dead whales from the beach. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that there had been one unconfirmed detection of a shark near Hamelin Bay at around 8am local time Friday morning. "But the ones I've seen that are back in the water, they actually come back around and beach themselves again".

Nine short-finned pilot whales were found dead at Albany's Ledge Point in November 1984, while 38 became stranded in April 1991 at Sandy Point, north of Broome.

WA's largest mass stranding involved 320 long-finned pilot whales at Dunsborough in 1996.

"I've never seen anything like it, seen so many whales beached like this", one tourist told the Associated Press news agency.

Parks and Wildlife Service staff are on-site and vets will assess the health of the surviving animals so authorities can return them to deeper water.
