'Myanmar builds military bases in Rohingya homes, mosques'

Since August 2017, the Buddhist-majority nation has reportedly driven almost 700,000 members of the besieged community into neighboring Bangladesh, as part of a wildly indiscriminate military crackdown the worldwide community has called ethnic cleansing.

In its new report titled Remaking Rakhine State, Amnesty revealed through eyewitness testimony and expert analysis of satellite images how "flattening of Rohingya villages and new construction have intensified since January in areas where hundreds of thousands fled the military's campaign of ethnic cleansing previous year".

The images also show new refugee reception centres surrounded by security fences and close to a heavy presence of military, raising concerns that Burma is preparing to restrict the freedom of Rohingya supposedly returning home to safety.

The UN said at the time it needed $434 million to care for the displaced Muslims until February.Food, shelter and healthcare remain pressing needs for the Rohingya, who fled a Myanmar army crackdown in Rakhine state en masse over the past six months.

Amnesty International's latest research reveals how whole villages of burned Rohingya houses have been bulldosed since January. "Not only are their homes gone, but the new construction is entrenching the already dehumanising discrimination they have faced in Myanmar". Amnesty has accused Burma of crimes against humanity.

UNITED Nations officials said today almost US$1 billion (RM4 billion) is needed this year to feed and care for the roughly one million Rohingya refugees living in overcrowded camps in southeastern Bangladesh.

The rights group is accusing the authorities of taking over areas Rohingya Muslims are meant to return to.

"The bulldozing of entire villages is incredibly worrying", said Ms Hassan.

Amnesty International claims Myanmar's authorities are erasing evidence of crimes against humanity.

Satellite imagery released by Amnesty on Monday as part of itsRemaking Rakhine State report suggests that abandoned Muslim villages are rapidly being cleared and replaced by government infrastructure, with the region becoming "militarised at an alarming pace".

As well as rapid housing and road construction in the area, at least three new security facilities were under construction, the global human rights group said.

Bangladesh and Myanmar signed an agreement to begin repatriating the refugees at the end of January, but Dhaka suspended it at the last minute.

But Amnesty International said the flattening of Rohingya villages and the new construction could make the voluntary, safe and dignified return of Rohingya refugees a distant prospect.

"We are going to build new villages and new homes and resettle people there according to the village planning", Zaw Htay said by phone.
