New Zealand diplomat in trouble over tweet about United States politics

New Zealand censored diplomat Caroline Beresford's vulgar tweets on Wednesday that urged the U.S. Democratic Party to get their "shit together or we all die".

New Zealand has censured its second-ranking diplomat in Washington after tweets were posted from her Twitter account saying U.S. democrats need to get their act together for the next presidential election "or we will all die".

Her remarks had apparently been prompted by a Friday column in the Hill that suggested Sen.

"Yes I did send those tweets and realized very quickly that they were inappropriate, which is why I deleted them", she told the news site in an email. It said it was taking appropriate action, but declined further comment.

"Our code of conduct and guidelines around the use of social media set very clear expectations of staff when making public comment, including maintaining political neutrality and care in expressing personal opinion".

The ministry said in a statement that it "does not in any way endorse the content or tone of the tweets", according to the AP.

Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters said the ministry had responded appropriately, while a spokeswoman for the US embassy in Wellington said they hold their New Zealand counterparts in "the highest regard".
