Denver were also reported to be in the hunt for Cousins having struggled through three options under centre last season but general manager John Elway has made his move for Keenum.

Keenum threw for 3,547 yards with 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions during the regular season. Surprisingly, it wasn't Kirk Cousins. Keenum will have similar tools at his disposal in Denver that he had in Minnesota. Keenum will have similar talent at receiver with the Broncos in Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders.

While there have been no reports of contract numbers, Ben Volin of the Boston Globe has speculated that Keenum "could be had" for somewhere in the neighborhood of $16-$18 million per season.

Elway said in recent weeks he still believed the team could get back into the postseason mix with an upgrade behind center. Instead of being forced into drafting a quarterback, the Broncos may be able to consider running back Saquon Barkley and guard Quenton Nelson, with of whom are considered the best prospects at their respective positions in quite some time. This collection of draft picks would set the Broncos up nicely for both the 2018 and 2019 drafts.

Keenum played for the Rams in St. Louis in 2015, the Rams in Los Angeles in 2016 and the Vikings last season.

Keenum's arrival means Paxton Lynch is expected to return as a backup with competition from Chad Kelly and a potential draft choice - that has not been ruled out - as Denver plans on trading Trevor Siemian.

The fact that the Broncos didn't think highly enough of Cousins as a realistic option that they didn't even offer him a contract is particularly surprising.

The Keenum deal officially removes a suitor for Cousins, although as of Monday afternoon it appeared the Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets would be making the strongest push to land the former Washington Redskins starter.
