Nun in legal battle with Katy Perry dies in court

A nun involved in a bitter legal battle involving pop star Katy Perry has collapsed and died during a court hearing.

The pair were trying to sell a convent in the Los Feliz neighbourhood of LA to a restaurateur named Dana Hollister.

The case was brought to court by Perry and the Archdiocese of L.A. against Hollister, whom they allege had tried to interfere with Perry's purchasing of the property.

In December a jury in LA awarded a total of $10 million in punitive damages to Perry and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles; It followed an earlier decision to award $5 million in compensatory damages divided between the two entities on November 17.

Sister Holzman-who was 89-appeared in court for a post-judgment hearing on Friday when she passed away.

The sisters said they were unhappy with Perry buying the property, due to her provocative music, with Callanan telling LA Times: "I found her videos. She had nothing to do with forcing herself on us", says Holzman. "It's not doing anyone any good except hurting a lot of people", according to the gossip site.

The case has been put on hold following the nun's death, although they had previously appealed to Pope Francis directly to give them their convent back.

Holzman and Sister Rita Callanan were among five members of the California Institute of the Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary, and were the only members who opposed the sale of their former home to the 33-year-old "Roar" singer.

Perry was awarded $5 million, while the Archdiocese received $10 million.

In 2016, a judge sided with the archdiocese and Perry and invalidated the sale to Hollister, clearing a path for Perry to buy the convent.

Earlier previous year, a judge had ruled that the archdiocese had the sole right to sell the property, and not the nuns who once lived in the Los Feliz convent, and thus the nuns' sale to Hollister was not valid.

Hours before her death Friday, Holzman stated her case to reporters from FOX-11.
