The White House on Tuesday hosted 19 nations, including Israel and Arab Gulf states, to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, but the Palestinian Authority boycotted the meeting, angered by the Trump administration's policies on Jerusalem.

On Dec. 6, Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, triggering world outcry and protests across the Palestinian territories. Senior administration officials who briefed reporters after the meeting on condition of anonymity declined to offer details or to describe what countries participating in the summit had put forward.

The conference, which started on Tuesday in Washington DC, went ahead with representatives from Bahrain, Egypt, the European Union, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, the United Nations, Japan, Cyprus, Canada and Israel.

Israel has become more alarmed about the drastic situation in Gaza, and called an emergency meeting of donors in Brussels recently to try to rally funding for development projects - such as the new water-treatment plant that Hamdallah had been traveling to visit for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. However, Faraj, who is also a close adviser of Abbas, said that "it is too early to accuse anyone", but added that Hamas is responsible for securing the lands it controls.

Home to some two million people, the Gaza Strip has groaned beneath a crippling Israeli/Egyptian embargo first imposed in 2007 after Hamas wrested control of the coastal enclave from forces loyal to the PA.
