Patriots reportedly trade for former 1st-round pick DT Danny Shelton

The Patriots have reportedly made a move to shore up their defensive line. The Cleveland Browns are not done overhauling their roster. According to ESPN.com, the Browns are sending defensive tackle Danny Shelton to New England in a deal that will also involve each team picking up a draft pick.

During his final season with Washington, Shelton registered 93 total stops - 53 solo tackles and 40 assists - with 16.5 tackles for lost yardage, five fumble recoveries and three hits on opposing quarterbacks.

It's the fourth trade the Browns have made in less than 24 hours, with receiver Jarvis Landry, quarterback Tyrod Taylor, and cornerback Damarious Randall in - and Shelton and quarterback DeShone Kizer out. The Browns will be receiving a 2019 third-round pick in return for Shelton. The terms of this deal are reported to be a third-round pick in the 2019 National Football League draft. While he's not a threat as a pass rusher, he more than makes up his worth as a run defender. While that's not All-Pro caliber numbers, it's still solid production from an interior lineman. However, since he was a first-round pick, the Patriots do have the option to pick up a fifth year at an increased price. New England also released Alan Branch earlier in the week.

The Browns drafted Shelton 12th overall in the 2015 draft and the trade officially closes the book on former general manager Ray Farmer's 4 first-round choices - Justin Gilbert, Johnny Manziel, Shelton and Cameron Erving - from 2014-15 who are no longer with the club. The big-bodied defensive tackle should immediately step in and contribute to a run defense that struggled at times last season.
