Peter Dutton wants a refugee intake of white South African farmers

"They work hard, they integrate well into Australian society, they contribute to make us a better country and they're the sorts of migrants that we want to bring into our country", he said.

AfriForum reacted to commentary this morning by Peter Dutton, the Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs, that South African farmers' applications to immigrate to Australia will possibly enjoy priority attention, by saying that this is a serious charge against the South African government.

It is not clear whether Dutton was referring to farm-murder statistics, or the South African government's recent undertaking to explore land expropriation without compensation.

Dutton added that white farmers from South Africa needed assistance "from a civilized country like ours". "The South African government has been very clear; the matter is now before Parliament and all stakeholders [will] be consulted - and they can also engage with Parliament", Mabaya said.

"Our future is in Africa, not elsewhere", he said.

The home affairs minister noted Australia has refugee, humanitarian and other visa programs which have the "potential to help some of these people".

The International Relations Department says Australia has offered to find ways to fast-track the immigration visas of white South African farmers based on false information spread by certain organisations.

"I think in this circumstance we do need to look at the persecution that's taking place", he said. He said he had asked his department to look at the options "because from what I have seen they do do need help from a civilised country like ours".

"We regret that the Australian government chose not to use the available diplomatic channels available for them to raise concerns or to seek clarification".

"There is no reason for any government in the world to suspect that a section of South Africans is [in] danger from their own democratically elected government". The farmers fear fatal violence following calls to transfer land ownership from black to white farmers.

White Afrikaners are a minority in South Africa but still own upwards of 70 per cent of the country's agricultural land, as a legacy of apartheid.

South Africa's new president Cyril Ramaphosa has vowed to pursue the same course as Zimbabwe's former leader Robert Mugabe in expropriating farmland from white farmers without compensation.

Mr Dutton said the farmers could make a contribution to Australian life.
