Positive energy, genuine affection in Sonia's dinner: Rahul

This dinner hosted by Sonia Gandhi for opposition parties should not be seen through the prism of politics, it was for friendship and better dialogue between parties, the Congress leader said. "Tremendous positive energy, warmth and genuine affection", tweeted the Congress chief along with a photograph of all the leaders who attended the dinner. The effort is going on. "TRS is not happy".

The move is being seen as an attempt to forge opposition unity to defeat the BJP-led NDA.

"Today, the nation faces many difficulties", Randeep Singh Surjewala, the Congress communications in-charge said, blaming the government for not allowing them to raise the issues such as thousands of crores of rupees being taken out of the country under the government's watch.

He said opposition leaders got together to discuss issues in national interest, create bonhomie in the opposition and exchange views. "There will be unofficial discussion on how to fix accountability of the government", he said.

The leaders included Sharad Pawar, chief of Nationalist Congress Party; Jitan Ram Manjhi, chief of Hindustan Awam Morcha who recently quit NDA; Kanimozhi of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam; Tejashwi Yadav, former deputy Bihar chief minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader; Babulal Marandi, former Jharkhand chief minister and leaders from Left parties.

Apart from Sonia, the Congress was represented by party president Rahul Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, and other senior leaders including AK Antony, Ahmed Patel, Mallikarjun Kharge and Randeep Singh Surjewala.

Leaders of other parties like JD-S and Kerala Congress, Indian Union Muslim League, Revolutionary Socialist Party and RLD are also likely to attend. Seventeen opposition parties had come together against the BJP-led NDA during the presidential and vice-presidential elections a year ago and Sonia Gandhi has been holding occasional meetings to nurture the bonding.

The Bahujan Samaj Party, which has skipped Opposition meetings in the past, was represented by senior leader Satish Chandra Misra.

The tussle started on the issue of the public sector bank frauds when the second half of budget session began on 5 March.

It is also noteworthy that Sonia Gandhi took the lead for the get together of the leaders even after Rahul Gandhi has taken over as the Congress President in December previous year with the feeling in the Opposition that senior leaders would show deference to her more than to her son.

The BJP on Tuesday blamed the Congress for the impasse in Parliament and dubbed it "anti-democratic", claiming that the party continues to have contempt for democracy as it had during the Emergency.
