President Trump fires Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State

In November there were rumblings that Trump planned to drop Tillerson and replace him with CIA Director Mike Pompeo. The Washington Post first reported news of Tillerson's firing, shortly before the president's tweet.

Of Mr. Tillerson, the president said only, "I want to thank Rex Tillerson for his service. A great deal has been accomplished over the last fourteen months, and I wish him and his family well".

'I am grateful to President Trump for the opportunity, and humbled by his confidence in me, to be nominated to be the next director of the Central Intelligence agency, ' Haspel said. Tillerson has urged Trump to stay in the landmark nuclear disarmament deal, but the president has vowed to withdraw by mid-May if it is not renegotiated.

Trump spoke Tuesday of his desire to break the deal, but notes that Tillerson "felt a little bit differently, so we were not really thinking the same".

Trump said he and Pompeo have "a similar thought process".

The biggest shakeup of Mr Trump's cabinet since he took office in January 2017 was announced by the president on Twitter as his administration prepares for an unprecedented meeting with the leader of North Korea.

Tillerson and Cohn join the ranks of chief of staff Reince Priebus, former communications directors Hope Hicks, Anthony Scaramucci and Mike Dubke, press secretary Sean Spicer, staff secretary Rob Porter, HHS director Tom Price, deputy assistant Sebastian Gorka, chief strategist Steve Bannon, FBI director James Comey, national security advisor Mike Flynn and many other high-ranking officials that have resigned or been fired.

Earlier, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders had refrained from saying Moscow was responsible.

"No one who had a hand in torturing individuals deserves to ever hold public office again, let alone lead an agency", Human Rights First's Raha Wala said on Tuesday. The timing of the move was created to allow Trump to put a new team in place in advance of those talks, said a White House official speaking on condition of anonymity in order to discuss a personnel decision.

At 11:17AM ET (15:17 GMT), the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index rose 60.97 points, or 0.39 percent, to 15,665.76. Trump tweeted, "He will do a fantastic job!"

Potential talks with North Korea were apparently the catalyst for booting Rex Tillerson from the State Department.

He announced that deputy CIA Director Gina Haspel will become the new director, and the first woman so chosen.

He also said he is confident that Pompeo will be confirmed by the Senate.

Trump fired FBI Director James Comey last May, who had been leading an investigation into whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation to influence the presidential election. During that meeting Trump had called for an increase in America's nuclear weapons stockpiles in contravention of worldwide treaties.

In December, Tillerson had offered to begin direct talks with North Korea without pre-conditions, backing away from a key US demand that Pyongyang must first accept that any negotiations would be about giving up its nuclear arsenal.

Rob Porter The White House staff secretary, a senior adviser in charge of much of the documentation that went to Trump for his signature, resigned in early February following accusations of domestic abuse from two former wives.
