'Roommate from hell' gets special probation, may avoid criminal charges

Her former roommate, Chennel "Jazzy" Rowe, attended Brochu's hearing.

The Hartford Courant reported that Brianna Brochu, 18, was sentenced Monday to accelerated rehab, which entails 200 hours of community service. The misdemeanor criminal mischief and breach of peace charges against Brochu could potentially be dropped after her probation is up, so long as she sticks to the conditions set by the court.

Upon seeing the post, Rowe contacted the university and also told the police about how she had been torturing her. At the time, West Hartford police requested that Brochu, who is white, also be charged with intimidation based on bigotry or bias and a hate crime; Brochu's lawyer, however, claimed her client's actions were not racially-motivated. "By giving her this second chance, I hope she will change her ways and finds love for all mankind no matter what race", Rowe said. Brochu's scholarship was revoked and she lost her job during the entire ordeal. She has since found another job and is working to pay him. Hardy said she reviewed police reports, witness statements, viewed officer's body cam video of the interviews with each witness and had police take a deep dive into Brochu's social media history in search of any racist materials.

Outside the courthouse, state NAACP President Scot X. Esdaile reiterated that Brochu should have been charged with a hate crime and basically stated what most of us are thinking about this lame slap on the wrist she received.

She said she did not know why Brochu was so unkind and that she'd started off trying to befriend her.

The teenager said she believes Brochu's efforts made her sick and that she consistently suffered a sore throat. In retaliation, Brochu filmed herself which rubbing bloody tampons on Rowe's backpack and inserting her roommate's toothbrush into her anus.

'This was two students who were placed together, I think randomly ... who didn't like each other, like has been happening since kids went to school and became roommates, ' Stevens said. He said a day seated in a courtroom would help Brochu get a sense of the problems and challenges people are forced to overcome each day. Finishing off her incriminating post by calling Rowe "Jamaican Barbie", Brochu's actions earned her a place on the Daily Dot's list of worst millennials of 2017. "You can let this case define you or bury it beneath your accomplishments", he advised. "There's a system for white people and there's a system for black people", he said.
