Rudd visits hospital treating nerve agent attack victims

Sgt Bailey, 38, was the first on the scene of the attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury on Sunday.

Police have cordoned off sites including ex-spy Sergei Skripal's house, a vehicle, the cemetery where his wife is buried, a restaurant and a pub.

Speaking after meeting Wiltshire Police Temporary Chief Constable Kier Pritchard in Salisbury, Ms Rudd said: 'Still very serious for the two people who were indeed the subject of this outrageous attack and for the police officer, I understand it's still serious, although he's still conversing and engaging'. They had a blood test, were provided the necessary assistance and advice. Both are under treatment in hospital but in stable condition.

A close colleague also spoke of fears for his recovery, saying: "Don't forget this is a nerve agent attack".

Police are still looking into who was behind the attack, which they say specifically targeted the victims. "He's obviously being treated for the effects of nerve agent contamination".

"This being treated as a major incident involving attempted murder by administration of a nerve agent", Rowley said but did not specifically mention the nerve agent.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow was "ready to consider" lending a hand, "whether it's poisoning of some British subjects, whether it's rumors about interference in the US election campaign".

A BuzzFeed News investigation claimed US spy agencies have linked 14 deaths to Russian Federation, but United Kingdom police shut down the cases.

And Mrs May, asked whether the action taken if Russian Federation was found to be responsible could include the expulsion of its ambassador, told ITV News: "We will do what is appropriate, we will do what is right, if it is proved to be the case that this is state-sponsored".

Meanwhile, Russia's foreign minister expressed resentment at suggestions Moscow was behind the attack and said the Kremlin was "ready to consider" lending a hand in any investigation, "whether it's [about] poisoning of some British subjects, whether it's rumors about interference in the USA election campaign".

Skripal betrayed dozens of Russian agents to British intelligence before his arrest in Moscow in 2004. Health officials insist there has been a low risk to the public.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd visited the city on Friday, including the area around the bench-now covered by a police forensics tent-where Skripal was found, according to a Reuters photographer at the scene.

"Of course, if action needs to be taken, then the government will do that".

A total of 21 people have received medical treatment.

Police have refused to publicly speculate on who is behind the attack, but many experts have focused on Russia because of the similarity to the 2006 killing of another former Russian spy who was poisoned in London with radioactive polonium-210.

Russian Federation is "obviously a clear candidate", but it is too soon to say who was behind the attack, Guthrie said, adding later: "It's also possible there could be some troublemaker out there who wants to make it look like it was Russian Federation".
