Russian Federation threatens to 'hit back' at Britain over spy poisoning

A team believed to be from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons inspects the back garden of house on the road where former Russian spy Sergei Skripal lived in Salisbury Wiltshire, Britain, March 22, 2018.

Britain has already expelled 23 Russian diplomats and broken off high-level contacts with Moscow.

The Russian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, said Johnson is "poisoned with venom of malice and hate, unprofessionalism and boorishness", adding that "it's scary to remember that this person represents the political leadership of a nuclear power".

May wants nations at the European Union summit in Brussels to make a strong statement against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Britain says the Skripals were poisoned with a Russian-made nerve agent, in violation of an global ban on chemical weapons.

"I have the principle that first I listen, and then I take a decision", he said.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has sought EU-wide support against Russian Federation for the March 4 poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury this month.

They said Friday the bench outside the Zizzi restaurant in the southwestern city of Salisbury will be preserved as a potential crime exhibit in the investigation of the attempted murder of the Skripals.

The Telegraph reported a second police officer was hospitalized Thursday after investigating the nerve agent.

He said it was too soon to say whether the bloc as a whole would take more action.

The police officer who was injured when responding to a poisoned former Russian spy earlier this month had been discharged from the hospital, United Kingdom authorities said.

Although Prague was among the first to condemn the poisoning and express solidarity with Britain over the incident, the prime minister's statement that the country would most likely expel a number of diplomats came as a surprise, since earlier both the prime minister and foreign minister had stressed the need for coordinated European Union action in this respect.

The EU's 28 members can only release a statement if there is unanimity.

Moscow denounced the moves by Britain and the EU. And Tusk said "more steps are expected at a national level" as of Monday.

The father and daughter remain in critical condition under heavy sedation, and, according to the judge, lack the mental capacity to give their consent.

In a speech last week, May blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the attack and expelled 23 diplomats from the Russian embassy.

The Kremlin says President Vladimir Putin has met with top security officials to discuss tensions with Britain over the poisoning of an ex-spy.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said earlier the Irish authorities would hold consultations on security matters in the coming few days before taking any measures against the Russian diplomats in the spirit of solidarity with the UK.

The leaders of former Soviet bloc European Union states the Czech Republic and Lithuania, as well as Denmark and Ireland, have said they were considering further unilateral steps, including expelling diplomats.

The strong solidarity from the European Union - which Britain is due to leave next year - is a victory for British Prime Minister Theresa May's efforts to muster worldwide condemnation of a chemical weapons attack on British soil.
