SC rejects all pleas seeking intervention in Babri Masjid-Ram Mandir dispute

The Supreme Court, which commenced its hearing into the Ram Temple-Babri Masjid land dispute case on Wednesday, has held that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramaniam Swamy can not intervene in the case. During the last hearing on February 9, the bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice S Abdul Nazeer had turned down the appellant's request for a daily hearing in the case on the ground that over 700 poor litigants were awaiting justice in other cases and the court couldn't possibly devote all its time to a land dispute, which, it said, was how it would treat this case.

The top court also said that a plea filed by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramaniam Swamy will be heard by another appropriate bench and not by the bench hearing land dispute issue.

It accepted the vehement contention of both the parties, Hindu and Muslim organisations and individuals, that only original parties to the dispute be allowed to argue. Among the applications dismissed by the apex court were those submitted by Shyam Benegal, Aparna Sen and Teesta Setalvad.

With its order of dismissal of the intervention applications, the SC trimmed the dispute to strictly between those who were parties to the suits before Allahabad High Court. The top court directed the Registry not to entertain any more interim pleas filed by third parties in the matter.

The Supreme Court is hearing a total of 13 appeals filed against the 2010 judgment of the Allahabad high court that mandated a three-way division of the disputed 2.77-acre site.

Meanwhile, the UP government told the court that all documents have been filed in the court and copies given to all parties and the court could commence the hearing. His petition to ask for the fundamental right to worship at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya was, however, revived by the court.

The next hearing date has been fixed on March 23.

The disputed plot has been divided among the Sunni Waqf Board, a Hindu organisation called the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla or Infant Rama, which is represented by the Hindu Mahasabha for the construction of the Ram temple.

On 6 December 1992, thousands of karsevaks who gathered in Ayodhya from across the country, demolished the Babri Masjid at the presence of security forces.
