Shakhtar star Fred will go to Manchester, says club CEO

Shakhtar star Fred will go to Manchester, says club CEO

"Fred will leave in July", Palkin confirmed, as quoted by FourFourTwo.

Rivals Manchester City and Manchester United will do battle for Brazil global Fred come the end of the season, according to Shakhtar Donetsk chief executive Sergei Palkin.

Manchester City were the favourites to sign the £40million-rated Brazilian but the Times are now claiming they have cooled their interest. If not to City, then Manchester United.

The news comes as a surprise after City had reportedly been in advanced negotiations to land the 24-year-old Brazil worldwide, but Paul Hirst of The Times writes that the two clubs could not come to an agreement despite City loaning striker Larry Kayode to the Ukrainian giants.

"He is ready for the best championships".

With Michael Carrick retiring at the end of the season and Marouane Fellaini uncertain to stay with his contract expiring in June, United manager Jose Mourinho is in the market for at least one midfielder this summer. "In addition to being very good, Fred is very professional".

Asked about the interest from City, Fred told ESPN Brasil: "It existed, yes, and it still exists".

The central midfielder - formerly a left back - has starred in the heart of the Shakhtar midfield, and he has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League as a result. It is the best league in the world, I have no doubt, and I believe that my football would evolve. In the middle of the year, we wait to see what will happen'.

Fred has been with Ukrainian giants Shakhtar since 2013 and displayed a remarkable level of consistency over the course of five seasons.

"I'm 25. There's a lot to grow and learn, play and observe great players of these clubs". Unfortunately it did not work, but now I'm focused here, out of the window we try to forget and focus on football.
