Shohei Ohtani added to Angels roster, will make pitching debut Sunday

Los Angeles Angels prized free agent signee Shohei Ohtani has been absolutely atrocious this spring causing plenty of valid criticism.

In Ohtani's final tuneup before the regular season, against minor league hitters on Saturday in Arizona, his fastball command was off, resulting in five walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches.

With the Los Angeles Angels set to take on the division-rival Oakland Athletics on Opening Day, Japanese sensation Shohei Ohtani is expected to make his regular season Major League Baseball debut.

At the dish this season, our models project Ohtani for a.271 batting average, with 12 homers, 38 runs scored, and 40 RBI over 378 plate appearances.

Shohei Ohtani got off to a flawless start at the plate.

Ohtani's hitting drew critical reviews during spring training, with scouts questioning his balance, top-hand swing, and long-term potential at the dish.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia attempted to put a courageous face on that performance, insisting that Ohtani's development was on track.

"As a hitter I was never really nervous on opening day", Ohtani said through interpreter Ippei Mizuhara.

With Sonny Gray having been dealt to the New York Yankees late last season, and injuries/question marks clouding many of his other options, A's manager Bob Melvin announced early on that Graveman would get the ball on Opening Day for the second year in a row.

"We could have shuffled things in a lot of different ways", Scioscia said when discussing the Angel's rotation.

Scioscia hasn't mapped out a plan for Ohtani beyond Sunday. Looking at video from his video in Japan, he is a true two-way guy.

"We know that Shohei just like any player is excited, but Shohei is well beyond his years as far as analyzing the game and going out there and understanding his talent", Scioscia said.

"We've seen the ability".
