South Africa apologises over 'distasteful' Warner stunt

South Africa apologises over 'distasteful' Warner stunt

Cape Town - Vernon Philander has heaped praise on team-mate Kagiso Rabada after his five-wicket haul lit up the first day of the second Test between the Proteas and Australia in Port Elizabeth.

Even though Elgar and Amla put on 88 for South Africa for the third wicket, that stand took almost 3 1/2 hours and 278 balls.

The on-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Kumar Dharmasena charged Rabada with making physical contact with Smith, but South Africa have indicated they will contest the charge on the basis that contact was accidental.

Rabada picked up three demerit points 12 months ago when he was adjudged to have led with the shoulder into Sri Lankan Niroshan Dickwella in a One-Day International, before picking up one demerit point each for swearing at England's Ben Stokes and Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan, the latest offence just last month.

"I thought we had bowled pretty well in the first half of the first session and then we let it slip before lunch".

Markram has already been lost in the response with Pat Cummins trapping him plumb lbw for 11 shortly before the close leaving Dean Elgar and night-watchman Rabada to see out the remaining overs of the day. "We still have the best bowling attack in the world", warned Lyon.

"CA is confident that the rest of the series in South Africa will be remembered for enthralling cricket played in the right spirit by both teams".

Rabada's is the fourth player disciplinary case of a spiteful series so far after Australia's Nathan Lyon and David Warner and South Africa's Quinton de Kock were all found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute in the first test in Durban.

In an emotional response, Warner claimed de Kock made "vile and disgusting" comments about his wife. Australian wicket keeper batsmen, Tim Paine saved Australia's blushes with a fighting knock of 36 runs which lifted a disastrous 200 score to a more respectable score, but still underwhelming total of 243 runs in the first innings.

Sutherland said he supported the sanctions and commended match referee Jeff Crowe for his handling of the "difficult situation".

"After the last game it was always going to be a bit sensitive", Philander said. He was out for 57 after facing 197 deliveries and hitting six fours. Smith and Shaun Marsh put on 44 before Rabada's day-changing spell, when Australia tumbled from 161-3 to 182-8.
