SP leads in Gorakhpur, Phulpur bypolls

Uttar Pradesh by-polls 2018 were necessitated after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya vacated the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats, respectively, following their election to the state legislative council.

The district magistrate in Gorakhpur refused to release the lead numbers in Gorakhpur for a long time and asked accredited journalists to move out of the counting hall.

Meanwhile in Araria Lok Sabha by-election in Bihar, BJP's Pradip Singh is leading with 1,13,169 votes, followed by Rashtriya Janata Dal's (RJD) Sarafaraz Alam with 1,04,190.

An official of the Election Commission told Firstpost that Akhilesh Yadav-led and backed by Mayawati Samajwadi Party is leading from Phulpur Lok Sabha constituency.

Gorakhpur Bypoll: SP's Praveen Kumar Nishad leading with 74,077 votes, BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla second with 70,317 votes after fifth round of counting.

Phulpur Bypoll: Samajwadi Party's Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel leading by 9924 votes with 87,272 votes, BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel second with 77,348 votes after eight round of counting.

After 11 rounds in Phulpur, the SP is at 1,22,247 votes, while the BJP is at 1,06,534 votes.

Attacking the BSP and the SP, the chief minister claimed, "These parties are indulging in negative politics, politics of bargaining and politics of opportunism". Gorakhpur is the sitting seat of UP Chief Minister Adityanath. Counting of votes will begin at 8 am and the early trends are expected to begin coming in by 10 am. BJP got 82811 votes.

There 19.61 lakh voters in Phulpur parliamentary constituency, while there are 19.49 lakh electorate for Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat. The independent jailed candidate, Ateeq Ahmad, has garnered 15,855 votes till now.

Initially, the postal ballots were being counted after which the electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be opened for counting. Notably, Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel of the Samajwadi Party is leading by as many as 6931.

The elections are keenly watched as the RJD is fighting alone, while its former partner JDU has shifted its alliance to the BJP's National Democratic Alliance.
