Stokes emotional after man-of-the-match display

But after so long out he is finding comfort in doing what he does best - winning cricket matches for his country.

"Even walking on the field the first time and walking off made me understand how much of a privilege it is to represent your country".

Taylor, man of the match in the first ODI after scoring a century in a three-wicket win for the hosts, felt tightness in his quad before he was run out cheaply in the second match of the series.

But, really, this was all about Stokes.

The philosophies of the teams aren't radically different, certainly in the batting approach.

Stokes, who faces a trial for affray over an incident in Bristol in September, returned after five months out in Sunday's series opener.

"I hope this is a stepping stone for things to come in the future, the things that we've got coming up".

All the training and hard work that went into that time spent at home really paid off.

"I did [feel nervous] before but when I walked out there it was the normal feeling I get".

"I wouldn't expect anything less of myself and I don't think (captain Eoin) Morgan would expect anything less of me either".

Stokes looked a little shaky early on and was nearly run out before taking a nasty blow to the hip after mistiming a pull shot, but improved dramatically as his innings developed.

There may have been the odd sign of rustiness in Hamilton but here he looked in supreme touch, particularly with the bat, and brought back that character and leadership to their all-round display that is all too often absent whenever he is not around.

Star all-rounder Ben Stokes has revealed his pain at missing England's Ashes campaign after being sidelined over an alleged fight outside a nightclub.

Morgan was critical of England's fielding in the series opener, but England claimed four run-outs and took three excellent catches in bowling New Zealand out for 223 on Wednesday.

David Willey ran out Ross Taylor and Jonny Bairstow ran out Colin de Grandhomme, before Stokes took centre stage in the field, dismissing Kiwi captain Tim Southee and Trent Boult.

New Zealand's top order struggled, hitting only seven fours in the opening 19 overs.

"He'll obviously be assessed over the next couple of days when we get to Wellington", Southee said.

"I expected to play a full part from the first game back and I don't think Eoin Morgan would have expected anything else as well". "I've been following all the cricket that all the lads have been playing but what I have to do now is focus on going forward", he said.
